ABOUT ZANZIBAR Zanzibar is as exotic and intriguing as its name suggests. The largest coral island off the east coast of Africa, it offers unrivalled diving and deep sea fishing. With its original Stone Town still very full of life behind those ornate carved doors, and its fishermen still sailing off into the blue yonder in wooden dhows as their ancestors did, Zanzibar, the ‘Spice Island’, is a fascinating, fragrant experience for Westerners. It’s a fan-tastic add-on to your safari circuit and we recommend a minimum 3 night stay to soak up all that the area has to offer. Fly from Kilimanjaro to Zanzibar via Dar-es-Salaam.
Tours of the island are a fascinating experience with its cultural sights and natural beauty.
Visit the fabled Stone Town, where history appears to stand still. Visit the House of Wonders, Dr Livingstone’s House and the Arab Fort amongst others, and take a fascinating look at the essence of Zanzibar. Explore the bustling market, winding alleyways, ornately carved and studded doors, cathedrals and countless mosques.
Visitors will also be fascinated by the Spice Plantations tour. The history of Zanzibar would be incomplete without the cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon, pepper and many other spices which brought the Sultans of Oman and the beginnings of the infamous slave trade. They can be seen in the plantations just outside Zanzibar town, and the tour includes opportunities to dazzle the senses with fresh spices. A description is given about a variety of spices and their uses in cooking and cosmetics.
Another interesting tour is to visit Prison Island, once the site of a gaol for misbehaving slaves. The island lies just off the old Stone Town and is fringed with a beautiful coral reef ideal for snorkelling, and has a lovely white beach for sun-bathing. It is also home to a family of giant tortoises, imported from the Seychelles in the late 19th Century.
